Memorial sign to KMPO’s former director Pyotr Viter opened in Kazan

Today in Kazan, a memorial sign was opened to the former director of the Kazan Motor-Building Plant, Hero of Socialist Labour Pyotr Viter. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister of Tatarstan Aleksey Pesoshin, representatives of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Tatarstan, and others.

“The name of Pyotr Viter – an outstanding defence industry organiser, a Hero of Socialist Labour, a former director of the Motor-Building Plant – is associated with many glorious deeds and successes in engineering,” the head of the Tatarstan’s Cabinet of Ministers said at the ceremony.

Alexei Pesoshin recalled the milestones of the Pyotr Viter’s biography. After serving during the Great Patriotic War as an aircraft mechanic, Viter entered the Kharkov Aviation Institute in 1946 and, after graduating from it, firmly associated himself with aircraft construction and engine building. His engines were used in Tu-154, IL-62, and IL-86. Under his leadership, fundamentals were laid for the engines for gas pumping stations.

For reference: Pyotr Viter was appointed Director of the Kazan Motor-Building Plant (now, the KMPO) in 1968. He was awarded three Orders of Lenin, Order of the October Revolution, Red Banner of Labour, Sign of Honour, and medals.
