I Opt for the Sky air show held in Kazan

24 July 2017, Monday

On July 23, the festival dubbed “I Opt for the Sky” was held near the Kazan Family Centre. The event was attended by Tatarstan Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin, Deputy Commander of Russian Aerospace Forces Sergey Dronov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of Tatarstan Albert Karimov, hero of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation Sergey Krikalev, as well as executives and employees of aircraft building enterprises, students and schoolchildren, numerous residents and guests of Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan.

The 5th I Opt for the Sky air show was held for the first time in the very centre of Kazan. In previous years, the air show grounds were the airfield in Kurkachi and the Gorbunov KAPO airdrome. This year, the well-loved event was combined with another one, no less significant for the Tatarstan capital, the final round of the Red Bull Air Race held in Russia for the first time ever.

Despite the extensive flight programme of the festival, its main event was the appearance in the sky of legendary aircraft build in the Kazan Aviation Plant: the Tupolev Tu-95 Bear, a large, four-engine turboprop-powered strategic bomber, and its evolution, the world's heaviest military aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber jet, known as the “White Swan”.
